Music Video Analysis - Part Of Me By Katy Perry
Days like this I want to drive away
Pack my bags and watch your shadow fade
You chewed me up and spit me out
Like I was poison in your mouth
You took my light, you drained me down
But that was then and this is now, now look at
me
This is the part of me
That you’re never gonna ever take away from me,
no!
This is the part of me
That you’re never gonna ever take away from me,
no!
Throw your sticks and your stones, throw your
bombs and your blows
But you’re not gonna break my soul
This is the part of me
That you’re never gonna ever take away from me,
no!
I just wanna throw my phone away
Find out who is really there for me
You ripped me off your love was cheap
Was always tearing at the seams
I fell deep, you let me down
But that was then and this is now, now look at
me
This is the part of me
That you’re never gonna ever take away from me,
no!
This is the part of me
That you’re never gonna ever take away from me,
no!
Throw your sticks and your stones, throw your
bombs and your blows
But you’re not gonna break my soul
This is the part of me
That you’re never gonna ever take away from me,
no!
Now look at me I’m sparkling
A firework, a dancing flame
You won't ever put me out again I’m glowin’ oh
whoa
So you can keep the diamond ring
It don't mean nothing anyway
In fact you can keep everything yeah, yeah
except for me
This is the part of me
That you’re never gonna ever take away from me,
no!
This is the part of me
That you’re never gonna ever take away from me,
no!
Throw your sticks and your stones, throw your
bombs and your blows
But you’re not gonna break my soul
This is the part of me
That you’re never gonna ever take away from me,
no
This is the part of me, no
Away from me no
This is the part of me, me, me, me, me, me, me,
me, no
Throw your sticks and your stones, throw your
bombs and your blows
But you’re not gonna break my soul
This is the part of me,
That you’re never gonna ever take away from me,
no
In this music video, I can apply Todorov’s
theory of narrative. Where the video begins as the narrative and this
equilibrium is then carried on until 1:58 until the main character has a
flashback and this disrupts the equilibrium. Although the equilibrium is
restored straight away this shows the feelings of the female character that
nearly everything she does reminds her of the bad relationship she has just
been a part of. The equilibrium is restored on the lines “but that was then and
this is now, now look at me” showing that that was in the past and her future
is more important. In this music video, the narrative continues to the climax
with no performance in it at all until 2:37 where she says, “now look at me I’m
sparkling” where she walks with her fellow female army friends to show the
braveness of females and after this there is a mixture of narrative,
performance and flashbacks of her past. So, it does not fully comply with
Todorov’s theory as the resolution of the equilibrium is never restored.
This music video can be applied to Goodwin’s
theory because there is a relationship between the song and the visuals which
tie in with the use of narrative and performance of the song. Also, the star
image is involved in this music video as she is the protagonist and the centre
of attention in the music video. Perry is the main character in the music video
and she performs to us as an audience how she feels about whatever it is that
her partner has done to her to make her become part of the army, this shows her
as a strong individual protagonist. The fact she is used as the main character
is a vital factor for Perry’s star image to make the music video look more
appealing by bringing a unique style and narrative in a way they are portrayed
to the audience using her costume, moves and appearance. It helps to promote the
artists image in public and also helping to promote the video while creating a
public reputation for the public to understand.
