Music Video Analysis - Perfect By Ed Sheeran
Darling just dive right in
And follow my lead
Well I found a girl beautiful and sweet
I never knew you were the someone waiting for me
Cause we were just kids when we fell in love
Not knowing what it was
I will not give you up this time
But darling, just kiss me slow, your heart is all I own
And in your eyes you're holding mine
Baby, I'm dancing in the dark with you between my arms
Barefoot on the grass, listening to our favourite song
When you said you looked a mess, I whispered underneath my
breath
But you heard it, darling, you look perfect tonight
Well I found a woman, stronger than anyone I know
She shares my dreams, I hope that someday I'll share her
home
I found a love, to carry more than just my secrets
To carry love, to carry children of our own
We are still kids, but we're so in love
Fighting against all odds
I know we'll be alright this time
Darling, just hold my hand
Be my girl, I'll be your man
I see my future in your eyes
Baby, I'm dancing in the dark, with you between my arms
Barefoot on the grass, listening to our favourite song
When I saw you in that dress, looking so beautiful
I don't deserve this, darling, you look perfect tonight
Baby, I'm dancing in the dark, with you between my arms
Barefoot on the grass, listening to our favourite song
I have faith in what I see
Now I know I have met an angel in person
And she looks perfect
I don't deserve this
You look perfect tonight
After watching this music video, I can apply Goodwin’s theory
to it as it does follow some of his theory aspects. It has the genre
characteristics of the pop genre, including bright colours and vibrant lighting
to create the atmosphere intended for the setting. However, because of the
setting being in a skiing resort costume seems to be of the more indie genre
with the checked shirts, scarfs and beanie hats which makes sense as it would
seem off for the characters to be wearing little clothing and bright pink for
the type of subtle music that goes with the lyrics.
There is a relationship between the visuals and the lyrics as
it is all about the relationship forming between the main character and his
lover. Sheeran sings about this relationship and then this is developed in the
visuals as we see them spending time together alone, laughing and having a good
time in general doing things like snow angels which we see in an establishing
shot at 2:22 in the music video.
There are also many close-ups of Sheeran himself as he
chooses to be the star image and main character in the music video. This part
of Goodwin’s theory would help Sheeran promote his image to the public and
helping to promote the video whilst creating a public reputation for the
artist. Everything that has a close-up in the video has some sort of connection
with their relationship, for example when they smile, a photograph of the two
of them, and the performance section when they really fall for each other.
The narrative of the music video starts from the very
beginning all the way through to when he said he’s written a song for her on a
pizza box then performs this to her in the music video so this is classed as
the narrative but as we can see the lip sync of when he sings it to her.
I can also apply Dyer’s star theory to this music video as
well as he says there are two paradoxes of stars and he says that a star is
both ordinary and extraordinary by being represented as just like a normal
person yet with some aspects that make them an interesting person, which is
shown in this music video where they’re just getting along as friends then
shows his hidden talent of writing and singing a song.
